Equipment

There are a number of tools that are required to complete an exterior timber project. Look on the back of your Wattyl Weathergard packs for specific tools for your job. Some of the most common pieces of equipment that may be required are:

  • Electric Sander
  • Sanding Block
  • Sand Paper with 120 and 240 grade finish
  • Long handled scrubbing brush
  • Quality brush
  • Lambs wool or synthetic Floor Applicator
  • Turps for clean up of solvent based product
  • Water for clean up of water based product
  • Rags for clean up

Step One: Timber Weathering

Allow any new dense or resinous timbers such as Merbau, Tallowwood, Jarrah, Blackbutt, Cypress Pine and other hardwoods to weather for 4-6 weeks before coating.

Rinse with water several times during this period to remove resins and improve penetration.

Allow new LOSP (Light Organic Solvent Preservative) Treated Pine to weather for 2 weeks prior to application.

If the timber has a shiny “mill glazed” surface or patches on the surface from the timber production process, sand it back to allow for adhesion and penetration of top coats.

Step Two: Colour and Product Choice

Decide on the colour and finish that you require.

Choose an off cut piece of timber and apply the product in exactly the same way and number of coats as you will on the actual surface.

Step Three: Preparation

It is imperative that your timber surface is adequately prepared prior to applying your top coat. Proper preparation ensures that your finish will last longer and be easier to apply.

Ensure timber is clean, dry and free from dirt, grease and oil and other contaminants. Use Wattyl Decking Cleaner on both new and existing timber surfaces to clean off any mould and grime as well as tannins on new timber. Apply Decking Cleaner and then rinse clean with water and allow to dry thoroughly.

If required, fill any small nail holes with a wood filler that matches your timber colour and sand smooth.
