Application - Interior
Thirteen points to bear in mind when applying a coating to an interior surface.

1. Always read and follow the instructions on the can.

2. Stir paint thoroughly in the can before commencing paintwork and then regularly during
    the job.

3. Never stir with a screwdriver or sharp metal object. It may damage the can or its lining, and
won't stir the paint thoroughly. Always use a flat stirrer.

4. Pay attention to the weather. Paint drying times are calculated based on 25°C and 50
relative humidity. Variation from this will effect paint drying times. In general, don't paint if
the temperature is likely to fall below 10°C during application or drying. It is not advisable
to paint at temperatures greater than 35°C as paint is likely to dry too quickly and blister.
    Damp Surfaces

Water based paints can be applied to damp surfaces, in fact dampening the surface is
recommended on very hot days and especially on highly absorbent surfaces. However too
much water will result in too thin a coat.
Turps or oil bases paint must not be applied to damp surfaces.

5. Buy the best quality tools you can afford. A cheap brush is generally more difficult to use
and doesn't give as good a result. Quality tools will deliver a longer lasting, better looking
paint job,and save application time as well.

6. Start at the top. Inside, start with ceilings, then walls followed by windows, trim and doors.
If possible remove screens for painting.

7. Start ceilings by brushing a hand wide strip all the way around the perimeter. Then using a
brush or roller, paint in half or one metre strips across the shortest dimension and working
out. Paint from dry areas into wet.

8. For walls, work in one meter segments from the top down. When using a roller, apply paint
in a broad M, W or X pattern with upward strokes.
Even out first with horizontal and then vertical strokes.

 9. When painting doors, paint the frame first and then the top and side edges. On
panelled doors, paint panels and moulding first, starting at the top. Finish by painting
     surrounding areas from top down.

10. When painting stairs, keep access clear by painting every second tread and then allow to
      dry before painting the rest.

11. When using gloss or semi-gloss on trim, less brush pressure is required than flat paints.
Never try to touch up a spot that has begun to set.

12. Don't try to make paint stretch further than it should by overbrushing.

13. Always clean your brushes thoroughly after use. Finishes that wash out in water often
leave a line of dried paint high on the bristles. This will wash out with methylated spirits,
followed by a further rinse in hot water and detergent.
After cleaning the brushes, groom the bristles neatly so that they will dry straight.
